Green Haven - A labour of love
- Category: South Central Alberta
Yes, Green Haven Garden Centre is now 35 years old and still “Growing Just for You”. It was started in 1977 by Irvin & Lyla Leishner and two of their daughters, Karen Barby & Gail Smith. Irvin was working fulltime as Detective/Sergent for the Lethbridge City Police and Lyla was a loans officer for the CIBC Bank. They felt the need to start a Garden Centre/Greenhouse business in the Lethbridge area, to give them an opportunity to retire from their professions at a young age but still continue to be productive in a self-employed business.
Karen & Gail began working for the business as soon as it opened and they are now also part owners/managers.
The greenhouse part of the business has been growing in size and products for the last 35 years. They now have one large retail greenhouse with nine more single houses for production totalling 35,000 square feet of growing area for bedding plants.
In 1998, the business did a major expansion to include a 5,000 sq.ft. store attached to the 10,000 sq.ft. retail house. They also realigned the outdoor area to connect to the new store and erected a large fence around it to retail the perennials, tree, shrubs and evergreens.
The store has also seen huge changes as it has expanded into selling garden supplies, as well as giftware, jewellery and accessories. Christmas time is another huge area that Green Haven has expanded into the selling of fresh and artificial greens, as well as themed ornaments and decorations to appeal to all ages. It is truly a Christmas Wonderland.
Green Haven has been a labour of love for the Leishner family and with the dedication of their wonderful staff they will continue to serve the Lethbridge area for many years to come.
